Single Barrel, Double Bourbon Coffee for Christmas

We are excited for you to try our exclusive bourbon barrel-aged coffee, which boasts delightful hints of vanilla and honey and concludes with a smooth, sweet finish. This remarkable coffee merges gentle whiskey undertones with the naturally rich flavours of sweet Rwandan beans. For an optimal experience, we recommend using a French press, though it adapts beautifully to any traditional brewing method.

Please be aware that due to the necessity of aging each batch in the cask for up to fourteen days, there might occasionally be a brief delay before the coffee is roasted. The taste and strength of the whiskey notes can also differ, as various casks impart distinct characteristics to the coffee, much like single-cask whiskies possess their own unique traits.

What is Barrel Aged Coffee?

In October 2023, we embarked on an intriguing experiment: barrel-ageing our speciality coffee in oak Bourbon whisky barrels sourced from Kentucky. This unique venture was made possible through a collaboration with Cotswold Distillery and the expertise of their Global Whisky Ambassador, Rob Patchett.

To our surprise, the outcome was nothing short of extraordinary. We tested a variety of speciality washed, natural and honey processed arabica coffees, and allowing them to rest in eight-year-old, single-use barrels, and the results were simply phenomenal.

Through this process, we have gained significant insights into refining the roast profiles of these barrel-aged coffees, with ageing periods ranging from one week to two months. This innovative twist on the traditional roasting method has proven to be incredibly captivating and generating results that left us speachless.

The coffee boasts a rich, boozy decadence, brimming with notes of vanilla and honey sweetness when brewed as filter or in a French Press. These flavours harmoniously blend with the inherent sweetness of the Rwandan bourbon variety, resulting in a sublime creation we proudly call Double Bourbon coffee.

This is precisely the calibre of speciality coffee one would anticipate, especially when it has luxuriated in a bourbon barrel from the Cotswolds.

Each box of our single-barrel-aged coffee offers a truly unparalleled experience. Our Double Bourbon Barrel Aged Coffee is crafted with exceptional care and attention to detail.

In collaboration with Cotswold Distillery, we handpicked single-use, charred oak barrels that have aged whisky for at least eight years and have been retired for no more than three months.

What is Barrel Aged Coffee?

Barrel-aged coffee is an art form, involving the maturation of unroasted coffee beans in oak barrels that once housed spirits such as whiskey or rum. This unique method enables the beans to soak up delightful notes of vanilla and sweet caramel, a hint of whiskey's spice, and a subtle oakiness from the barrel. The outcome is a coffee with a rich and intricate flavour profile, distinctly set apart from conventional brews.

Does Barrel Aged Coffee Contain Alcohol?

No, whisky barrel-aged coffee does not harbour any alcohol. The beans are matured in vacant barrels to imbibe the aroma and flavour nuances, but all traces of alcohol are absent, guaranteeing that the coffee remains non-alcoholic.

Why is Barrel Aged Coffee More Expensive?

The meticulous art of barrel-ageing coffee, which demands significant time and skill, accounts for its elevated price. Our coffee beans rest in barrels for a fortnight, during which they absorb distinctive flavours, making each batch truly one of a kind and a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship involved by our Head Roaster Dan Fox.

How Does Barrel Ageing Impact the Flavour of Coffee?

Barrel ageing imparts smoky, woody, and fruity nuances to coffee beans, varying according to the barrel type. This process enriches the coffee's inherent flavours with delicate notes from the barrel, resulting in a sophisticated and intricate taste experience distinct from conventional coffees.

How Should I Brew Barrel-Aged Coffee?

Methods such as cafetière and cold brew are perfect for showcasing the intricate flavours and aromas of barrel-aged coffee. Cold brewing, especially, can highlight its subtle notes, although traditional techniques like cafetière and AeroPress also perform admirably. Explore our brew guides below for more information.
