This 3 hour course is aimed at brewing enthusiasts who want to learn how to work with different preferences, different coffees and all kinds of equipment. We want home coffee users to get the best of their brew, every time!
No previous experience is required. At the start of the session, we will ask how you brew from home to ensure that the content we cover is relevant to the equipment you have available. There will be more than enough time to reflect on each attendee’s (maximum of 6 people) brewing techniques and equipment use.
The session will start with a full spectrum coffee cupping, covering all sides of the coffee industry in an unbiased manner. This will demonstrate the effect that origin, process and roast degree have on the finished brew. Additionally, we will be able to understand and taste the differences in how different companies operate within our industry. We will outline common industry practices found in the marketplace, and what those mean to you as a coffee consumer, before exploring the journey that coffee takes from seed to cup, and touch on the ethics of how we source and market our beans at Ue Coffee Roasters.
Next, we will move onto the principles of brewing, where we cover off all you need to know to build the essential brewing ‘toolkit’. All key variables will be discussed along with their interactions, alongside the all-important consideration of what kit suits your needs, and those of others. We’ll also meet the tricky subjects of water quality, grinding and mastering consistency. There will be the opportunity to have your own practical skills evaluated and our trainer will guide you on how to build upon your results! We will detail all of the necessary theory underpinning the art of brewing, and you’ll taste the results of what we’re talking about by direct comparison.
Finally, you will receive a box of beans to take away with you, and will leave with a wealth of resources to help you continue brewing successfully following the course. You’ll be able to stay in touch with us too of course, as we appreciate that 3 hours is not enough to master our complex trade!
