This exciting coffee comes from high on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro in North-Eastern Tanzania. The Kilimanjaro Native Cooperative Union was set up to help the farmers get a better price for their coffee and to enable improvements to be made in the processing and trading of what is currently their largest export crop. This coop is owned by farmers of the 90 plus village societies that grow coffee in the region and it has offices in the capital of Moshi.

Cherries are picked ripe with repeated sweeps of the same plot occurring every couple of weeks or so. If not taken to a local collection processing centre, known as a CPU, beans are pulped and fermented at home to prevent spoilage before being taken by the cooperative. Here it is processed and collated before being transported in parchment and offered for sale through the Tanzanian Coffee Board, which distributes samples to exporting companies and auctions the lots. Once bought, the coffee is further ‘milled’ by Mambo’s facility in Morogoro which means any defects are removed, the beans are laser colour sorted, hand-picked if needed and then bagged. It is exported by Mambo Cooperative under the name Yetu Tamu, meaning “our coffee is sweet” and this is a true reflection of the coffee as you will experience the sweetness of vanilla and caramel.

Many African coffees bear the initials AA, AB or other letter combinations, which signifies the size of the beans, with AA being the largest. This particular lot of coffee is AB, which means they are some of the largest beans produced but this doesn’t necessarily have any link to the quality of the coffee. It is important that the beans within one lot are of similar size, however, as this allows the coffee to be evenly roasted to get the best results.

All of our coffee is now in sold in the most sustainable carbon-neutral packaging. We use the new, innovative designs from Dutch Coffee Pack, which is made entirely of plastic that is 100% recyclable. All of the carbon emitted in the production of these bags is compensated in full by reducing emissions elsewhere without compromising the freshness of the coffee inside.
