About this coffee;
During this time of the year, we are looking at coffees from Burundi to buy and while we were cupping a big table of coffees from this marvellous country we were absolutely astonished by the complexity and character of this rare micro-lot that we were able to secure just for ourselves.
Its location at a high altitude (1,730masl) and low humidity environment provides the optimal environment to enhance the quality of the coffee and along a very quick green coffee processing, the Cafex Mill washing station develops an authentic fruit bomb with lots of sweetness and complex acidity to ensure that you enjoy a unique cup of filter coffee.
This fully washed lot is from smallholder producers on Shikakoni Hill in Kayanza. These farmers work with Cafex, a project launched by a Belgian-Burundian couple that wanted to combine the coffee production of their ancestral lands with sustainable development and a desire to improve the lives of the local population.
This lot is milled and exported by Ikawa Nziza which began in 2013 as a partnership between the owners of Cafex mill and Schluter (now Covoya Europe), specifically aimed at building and promoting the speciality coffee production in Burundi. Ikawa Nziza’s mill is the first purpose-built speciality dry mill in Burundi, situated at altitude and designed to cater for high-quality micro-lot coffees.
